“…Apart from me, you can do nothing. – John 15:5 ESV
This is the Stage Harbor “Lighthouse” located in Chatham, MA. It was built in 1880 out of cast iron. The original tower was fitted with a fifth-order Fresnel lens which helped radiate a light visible for 12 nautical miles. For 53 years it faithfully served its purpose guiding ships to safety and housing keepers that received various commendations and efficiency stars for aiding in life-saving rescues.
Eventually, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1933 and replaced by a skeleton tower. Its lantern, which was fully operational, was removed and sent to a lighthouse depot for future use. The lantern-less tower and three surrounding acres of land have been under private ownership since then. It has now become more of a monument.
At first glance, many people are not able to identify this structure as being a lighthouse. Particularly because it’s missing one key architectural element, a light! In fact, even after learning what it is, some either raise an eyebrow, frown, or even chuckle. Again, because what makes it a LIGHThouse is not there. Quite frankly, I wonder to myself why they still refer to it as a lighthouse.
Most of my Lighthouse Devotions explain how we as believers and followers of Jesus Christ are like lighthouses for God shining the light of His love, mercy, and grace in a spiritually dark world. This light is not our own but we have been entrusted to shine it at all times and everywhere we go. This does not mean that we will never experience times when the challenges of life cause it to go dim and find ourselves in need of rekindling it. That is why we must take heed to the many biblical warnings against spiritual complacency, apathy, and negligence. These attitudes, if not identified and corrected in their early stages, will eventually cause our light to be extinguished and can even snuff it out indefinitely. The result is that we become satisfied with just standing strong (religiously) without actually reflecting Christ in our lives.
Identifying ourselves as Christians without an evident lifestyle can also cause people around us to question our genuineness. In fact, it may even become a stumbling block for those who are considering the Christian faith, something we definitely do not want to be responsible for. Of course, there will always be those who judge us because we do not meet their expectations or their Scriptureless definition of a “Christian,” nevertheless we must still make a conscious effort to guard our testimony and keep our demeanor in check. However, if we are truly committed followers of Jesus Christ then we will not only desire but with His help, strive to consistently live in obedience to His word. And whenever we slack off or stumble in our path, the Holy Spirit will always quicken (convict) our hearts and give us the opportunity to correct our ways and get back on the right track.
A lighthouse without a LIGHT is just a HOUSE/tower. Likewise, a Christian without evidence of CHRIST in his/her life is just an IAN/religious person. Interestingly enough, a Google search shows that IAN is also an internet slang that stands for I Am Nothing.
We must be careful not to succumb to the self-centered demands of a world system whose goal is to fill the human soul with everything but God. A system that our adversary the devil, uses to disable the light of Christ in us. He knows that without that light shining he can operate in this world with less resistance. In order to avoid this, we must commit to reading, studying, and applying God’s word to our lives daily. We must also dedicate time in our busy schedule to earnestly pray. And we must pursue godly fellowship, corporate worship, and intentional servant evangelism. If we develop, cultivate, and maintain such disciplines, it will greatly help us to…
Keep God’s LIGHT in our Lighthouse and
Keep CHRIST in our Christian.
Prayer: Lord, help me to un-clutter my life. If I can do something to reflect your love and mercy and say something that will echo your words of grace, Lord, show me. Deliver me from being ensnared in the cares of life so that I can keep the light in my lighthouse burning and reflect Christ in my Christian walk each and every day. In Jesus name, I pray, Amen.
