Beside Still Waters

Lighthouses can be found all around the world. No matter where they have been erected, their primary purpose is to serve as navigational aids, warning mariners of hazards like rocky coastlines and reefs, and guiding vessels safely into and out of harbors. For that reason, they are usually located in the midst of or near a body of water. From rocky cays amid stormy seas to the shores of tranquil estuaries and cays, lighthouses sit still, fulfilling their lifelong duties.

There will be times when you feel like a lighthouse, firmly grounded but surrounded by crashing waves, impenetrable fog, or thunderous lightning accompanied by pelting rain. And while your light may remain illuminated, it may be faint and flickering.

However, there will also be times when all around you is calm, even if just for a short while. In moments like these, you must take advantage of the clear skies and the stillness. You need to shine brightly and steadily. In other words, you must learn to appreciate and be thankful for the opportunity to relax, breathe, and contemplate the gift of serenity while preparing yourself for the imminent storms ahead. It is said that without turmoil, we cannot appreciate true peace.

Indeed, life is unpredictable. Even when we strive to plan, prepare, and take the necessary steps to succeed, we cannot avoid challenges and mishaps altogether. Yet, we must take comfort in knowing that there is a calm after every storm, and sometimes it is accompanied by a beautiful rainbow.

Turning to Scripture is also an effective way to combat the unstable emotional weather of life. Sometimes, a simple reminder/recital of the ageless Psalm reassures us of God’s faithfulness, care, and provision for His people, much like a shepherd for his flock.

I pray God’s peace over you. I also pray that His Spirit guide you to the place where all of the world’s cares are drowned and where strength and spiritual refreshing abound, beside still waters.
