In Memory of Gill

Sea of Glass
by Daniel S. Warner, pub.1888

We stand upon the sea of glass,
That’s mingled with Jehovah’s fire;

Our robes are white, our feet as brass,
We stand upon the foe’s empire.

Refrain:
We stand redeemed upon the sea,
And sound aloud the harps of God;
All glory, praise, dear Lamb, to Thee,
For Thou hast saved us by Thy blood.

We bow no more to gods of men,
We shout the vict’ry o’er the beast;
Yea, o’er his mark and o’er his name
We overcome through Jesus Christ.

Upon this bright and glowing place
Of heaven’s truth and burning love,
Our souls in glory ever reign,
With all the ransomed host above.

In sweet and pure unbroken peace,
Upon the sea we glide along;
Our hearts so full of holy bliss
Flow out in everlasting song.

Every lighthouse in my collection is special. Some more than others. The one pictured above was given to me by a very special lady. She was a perpetually jolly, genuinely Christ-loving, truly humble, and passionate Gospel-proclaiming soul. On occasions, I look at this little glass lighthouse and pause to honor the memory of who was in life, Gilberte Druard Mayorga a.k.a. Gill (pronounced, Jill).

Gill went to be home with the Lord a short time after being diagnosed with Cancer. Her departure, even though celebrated as her graduation into eternal glory, left a little void that occasionally brings tear-jerking nostalgic memories.

I am not sure if Gill knew how to drive or if she ever drove before. But those of us who knew her can testify that we frequently saw Gill walking (in any kind of weather) with her son all over town.

Whenever I look at this lighthouse and think of Gill I envision her in a disease-free immortal body walking the streets of gold (in heaven) and gazing at the marvelous sea of glass. This is the blessed hope of all those who have confessed Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

I could elaborate on the theology of what the Apostle John saw and described as something that appeared to be a sea of glass and on when we will actually get to behold such a site, but this devotion would become a rather lengthy post. So, instead, I will encourage you by reminding you that this is a trustworthy documented prophetic vision of a heavenly panorama; something that will be witnessed by every believer on the day they enter eternity in their glorified bodies.

Studies show that walking helps increase cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness,  reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and improve the management of conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes. Plus, it helps in maintaining a healthy weight. But no matter what life-extending benefits walking may provide, it cannot ward off every illness nor can it reverse the inevitable process of aging. The human body is mortal, corruptible, and will eventually reach its appointed life-span here on earth. As despairing as this may sound, the joyous part of it is that believers can rest in the promise of a new incorruptible body. A body that will allow us to enter a place where there will be no more pain, crying, or death; a place where we will be in the very presence of our God, Creator, and heavenly Father.

I know I will someday enter this place and will once again see Gill. Until then I can only look forward to walking alongside her and other loved ones while marveling at the heavenly sea of glass. How about you? Are you confident that you will enter? If not, all you have to do is found in THIS LINK.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, I look forward to the day when I am in your presence; the day when the ills of mortality will be no more. On that day, my eyes will witness not only the glorious wonders of heaven but most important, the glory of your eternal light. Until then, may the light you have deposited in me shine ever so brightly helping others to find their way to your saving arms.

  1. After reading your post, it’s remarkable when viewing certain objects can bring back different memories. Food does the same for me. e.g. family casseroles, biscuits, and gravy, Food and family memories, and in this case, a gift from a friend. Every time I view the Cross it brings to mind what Jesus did for me. His blood sacrifice for my sins–His pain and suffering for ME! Thanks, Joe for the kind words regarding our friendship. I did publish a blog sometime ago regarding A Glimpse At Heaven but I don’t believe I mentioned the “sea of glass.”

  2. Thank you for this post. I understand completely every word. It has been only this past September 29th when I lost my youngest son to a heart attack. He was only 47. It seems there is a lacking enzyme in my father’s line which the liver is suppose to produce to break down cholesterol. My father died at the young age of 44, my oldest son at the age of 31, my brother at the age of 61 and I have 2 stents in my heart despite taking two medications to control it. I am comforted, in these days of sorry, we will all meet again when it is my turn die to this body.As I wrote in a recent post, “He chose me before I chose Him.” He supplied the Grace which gave me the opportunity to respond in faith and say “yes” to Him. I now am certain the Holy Spirit resides in me. I can’t possibly imagine living this life empty when there is so much beauty to behold even with the sorrow.

  3. Gill was a sweet, gentle woman of God filled with love for Jesus. Every Christmas she would give me a card and gift and would invite me often to walk with her as she gave out Gospel tracks, something that she would do often. I too can’t wait to see her smiling face again in Heaven. I’m sure she has been walking those streets of Gold and when I get there she will probably insist on showing me around. Can’t wait to ‘walk’ with her again. Very touching devotional, thank you for writing it. Love, Mari.
