…you are precious in His sight!

Regardless of their size, shape, color, or condition, lighthouses are undeniably marveled at by those who love them, especially aficionados like me. These sentinels of the sea have captivated the hearts and fostered the imagination of writers, photographers, and collectors all over the world. They are, in fact, the only reason I blog.

I must admit that at first, I was a little apprehensive about using the title above. What was once deemed as encouraging, unifying, and biblically-inspired lyrics have now been tossed into the politically incorrect bandwagon. Nevertheless, I am at peace knowing that my heart is free of any bias that this song may suggest to those with thorns of bitterness and resentment in their hearts. I still believe that…

Considering the title of this devotion I could write yet another blog post on the evils of racism and how it has been a lingering social cancer for centuries. I could also reiterate how it contributes to the increasing hatred and violence around the world. But, I will spare you the redundant enlightenment since the rise of racial tension is quite evident everywhere you go, especially today. Unfortunately, many of the so-called “social justice” movements that claim to fight for racial equality, peace, and tolerance are advancing their cause in a fascist manner. Thus, achieving quite the opposite of what they intend to. Yet in the midst of all the chaos, isn’t it comforting to know that where man fails God succeeds?

There is no populated place on earth where you can escape the ill effects of sin. No matter where you go, as long as other people are present, you will have to battle some form of peace-robbing ism. So, wouldn’t it be nice to escape (every so often) to a place where we can find not only acceptance but forgiveness, restoration, worth, security, and genuine unconditional love? Such a place does exist! It is in the presence of our heavenly Father. There we can find…

• Acceptance, regardless of how we see ourselves or how society classifies us.

• Forgiveness, regardless of our intentional or unintentional offenses.

• Restoration, regardless of the nature or extent of our brokenness.

• Worth, regardless of our past, present, and future shortcomings.

• Security, regardless of the emotional and psychological threats we encounter.

• Love, regardless of race, gender, social status, or religious/denominational affiliation. 

It is a place where we can find hope. Hope not only for the here and now but most importantly, for all eternity! And we can confidently enter that place at any given time through prayer, meditation, worship, the reading of Scriptures, and the realization that God has promised to be with us wherever we go.

For any lighthouse enthusiast, there really aren’t any unattractive or unimpressive lighthouses. Even the most unusual nautical beacons are a work of art to those who love and appreciate them. A true lighthouse lover will even see great potential for those lighthouses that have been deteriorating due to inactivity and lack of maintenance. That is why many decommissioned and abandoned lighthouses have been restored to their original condition or transformed into breathtaking private dwellings and public attractions.

Imagine yourself as the lighthouse you truly are. You are a work of art in the eyes of Him who not only created you but who is your greatest admirer. No matter what you look like (physically), who you identify with (philosophically), how you feel (emotionally), where life has taken you (morally/relationally), or why you constantly miss the mark (spiritually), He loves you UNCONDITIONALLY. Don’t let the voices of the past (yours or your lineage’s) nor the voices of a callous, immoral and selfishly bitter society cause you to think less of yourself or others for that matter. Rise above your fears, insecurities, and limitations and stand tall, proud, and confident. If you have turned over your life to Christ, trust what God says and thinks of you.

• You are valuable –  “You have been bought and paid for by Christ” (1 Corinthians 7:23).

• You are totally forgiven – “There is no judgment against you because you belong to Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

• You are completely accepted – “Jesus made you acceptable to God” (Titus 3:7).

• You have been transformed, made new. – “ In Christ’s eyes, you are a brand new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

• You are beautiful – “You were wonderfully made in His image.” – (Psalm 139:14).

There is a lighthouse Lover who appreciates you, thinks you have great potential, and are very useful in His kingdom. You are truly PRECIOUS in His sight.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for considering me one of your most valuable creations. My worth is in you and not in anything or anyone else. As you continue to mold me into the image of your Son remind me that I am precious in your sight. Help me to see people through your eyes, especially those who don’t know you as Lord and Savior. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
